Mini-launch of flipbooks to combat GBV

December 19th, 2024

I attended an event called Let’s Talk Period. “Yes, even guys are interested in menstruation and the issues surrounding it!” I said with a laugh when my boss asked why I wanted to go. It was an art exhibition organised to celebrate 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence (GBV).

I was surprised to see flipbooks displayed that our company, Three Mountains Advisors, had produced. Until then, I had only vaguely heard about this project. Seeing them printed and in use left me curious to uncover their journey.

It all began in May 2023, when GIZ Rwanda’s Prevention of Sexual and Gender-based Violence project tasked us with creating educational resources to prevent GBV. Their goal was clear: one flipbook had to be a straightforward, engaging tool to spark discussion on GBV during community outreach. The other flipbook had to explain the counselling processes, medical support, and legal services available at health centres and One Stop Service Centres.

The flipbooks are compact, interactive tools to simplify complex information and spark discussion. Each flipbook features bright, inclusive illustrations at the front and a summary of the discussion points at the back. They showcase diverse characters to ensure the material resonates with everyone, including individuals with disabilities who often face barriers to accessing such information.

Now, after many rounds of reviews and feedback, the final versions were printed. Here they were, front and back covers exuding vibrancy, with images that immediately drew attention and content that provided guidance.

I decided to continue my search and find out how they are used. I visited Francois, a facilitator trained by GIZ in the use of these flipbooks.  Jean Baptiste joined me to document Francois’s work. Watching Francois in action was inspiring.

“These flipbooks are brilliant!” Francois said. “They make tough topics easy to talk about. The characters feel like they’re speaking directly to the audience, helping people connect with the message.” His enthusiasm reflected the positive impact these tools had made.

What struck me most was how participants in Francois’s sessions were actively engaged. The flipbooks weren’t just being read, they were sparking discussions, questions, and genuine interest. Seeing how they empowered communities to address sensitive issues like GBV on a personal level made me incredibly proud.

Developing these flipbooks was a meaningful project for our team. GIZ took it to the next level, coordinating the review process. Every detail, from the design to the language, was carefully crafted to foster understanding and promote open dialogue. They symbolise a commitment to a future where knowledge empowers individuals to stand against GBV and support those affected.

Who would have thought attending an event about periods could lead to such a meaningful journey? It’s clear that we’re not just turning pages we’re changing mindsets too. With more facilitators like Francois using these flipbooks across Rwanda, the conversation about GBV is becoming louder and more inclusive. We encourage everyone to explore these resources and join us in making a difference. Together, we can create informed and empowered communities.
